Getting audio out of a video container
Containers and codecs
MP4, MOV and WEBM are containers: envelopes holding a video stream, one or more audio streams and metadata. Extraction opens the envelope and writes the audio stream to its own file. Whether it works depends on the codec inside, which is why an H.264/AAC MP4 always extracts while an exotic MXF may not.
Why extract at all
Camera audio is usually a scratch reference used for syncing to the recordist's files, but on smaller shoots it is the only audio there is. Either way, having it as a WAV means you can look at the waveform, sync it, clean it and mix it with the same tools as everything else.
Privacy on confidential footage
Rushes under embargo, interviews with protected sources and unreleased commercial work cannot legally be uploaded to a random conversion site. Extracting locally in the browser keeps the file on your machine and out of anyone's processing queue.

MP4, MOV and WEBM are containers: an envelope holding a picture stream, one or more audio streams and metadata. Extraction opens the envelope, decodes the audio stream and writes it to its own file. Whether that works depends on the codec inside, not on the file extension, which is why an H.264/AAC MP4 always extracts while an exotic professional container may not.

How to extract audio from a video

Quality when the source is compressed
Camera and web video almost always carries AAC or Opus audio, which is lossy. Extracting to WAV does not restore what that encoder discarded; it simply stops anything more from being lost. That matters, because re-encoding a lossy track to another lossy format — AAC to MP3, for instance — stacks two sets of artefacts.
So: WAV or AIFF for anything that will be edited, mixed or processed; MP3 only for a review copy. And if the shoot had a sound recordist, treat the extracted camera track as a sync guide and cut against the recordist's files instead — syncing audio and video covers that workflow.

- MP4, MOV and WEBM are decoded natively by modern browsers. MKV depends on the codecs your browser exposes, and MXF is not supported. If a file cannot be decoded you get a clear message rather than a broken export.
- Which output formats can I export?
- WAV and AIFF as uncompressed PCM, or MP3 at 320 kbps. WAV and AIFF apply no second round of lossy compression; MP3 re-encodes and is only worth choosing for a light review copy.
- Is my video uploaded anywhere?
- No. The video is decoded locally by your browser through the Web Audio API and the audio file is written in the page. No frame and no audio is sent to a server.
- Will the audio quality be degraded?
- Exporting to WAV or AIFF writes the decoded samples as uncompressed PCM, so no lossy compression is applied a second time. The audio can never be better than the compressed track already inside the video, but nothing further is lost.
- Can I extract audio from an MOV straight from a camera?
- Yes, provided the audio codec inside is one your browser can decode. Camera MOV files carrying PCM or AAC audio work.
- Does the extracted audio stay in sync with the picture?
- Yes. The audio is written from the start of the file at its decoded sample rate, so it lines up with the picture when you drop it on the timeline.
- Is there a file size limit?
- Free and pay-per-use runs are capped at 500 MB per file. With Pro there is no fixed cap, so the practical limit becomes your own machine's memory: the whole track is decoded uncompressed in the browser, which puts multi-gigabyte camera files within reach of most modern laptops but not of every phone.
