MP4 to WAV, and what happens to the audio

AAC in, PCM out

The audio inside an MP4 is almost always AAC, a lossy compressed stream. Writing it to WAV decodes it to linear PCM: it does not restore what the compression removed, but it stops any further loss and gives you a file every editor and DAW can read natively.

Keep the rate you were given

Camera and screen recordings are usually 48 kHz, sometimes 44.1 kHz. Extracting at the source rate avoids a resample you did not ask for; convert afterwards only if your timeline needs a different rate.

Professional use cases

Video editing

Get a workable audio track out of a delivered MP4 for a re-cut.

Post-production

Extract a reference mix from a picture export for comparison.

Your audio stays on your device

Decoding, processing and export all run in your browser: compressed formats are decoded with the Web Audio API, and WAV, AIFF and MP3 files are written by JavaScript in the page. Your audio is never uploaded to our servers. Only anonymous page analytics and, if you sign in, your account and payment details go online.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert MP4 to WAV without software?
Drop the MP4 into the tool above, choose WAV and download. Your browser does the decoding, so nothing is installed and nothing is uploaded.
Is the WAV lossless?
The WAV container is uncompressed PCM. The audio inside your MP4 is usually AAC, so the WAV is a lossless copy of that decoded stream. No further quality loss.
What sample rate does the WAV come out at?
The browser decodes the AAC track and normally returns it at 48 kHz, which matches most camera audio. The rate is displayed before you export, so you can check it against your timeline.
Can I use the result in Premiere Pro or DaVinci Resolve?
Yes. Standard PCM WAV imports directly into Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, Final Cut Pro and Pro Tools.
