Remapping channels, step by step

1. Import

Load the multichannel file you need to reorganise.

• Drop the poly file; every channel is listed with its recorder name and waveform.
• Read the delivery spec first so you know the target order before you touch anything.
• Use the player to identify any unnamed channel by ear before mapping it.

2. Settings

Build the new map, one output slot at a time.

• Assign each output slot to a source channel, for example output 1 takes source 3.
• Duplicate a source into two outputs when a delivery needs the mix in two positions.
• Leave a slot silent when the spec requires an empty channel.
• Rename outputs to the delivery convention, not to the recorder convention.

Tip Write the target map on paper first. Most mapping errors come from improvising in the interface.

3. Export and ZIP

Export as one remapped poly file or as separate stems.

• Keep the source sample rate and bit depth for a lossless remap.
• Export a single interleaved file when the delivery asks for a poly master.
• Export per channel when the delivery asks for stems; two or more files arrive in a ZIP.
• Name the file with the delivery code so it is unambiguous on the other end.

4. Quality control

A wrong map is silent until someone plays the wrong channel.

• Reimport the exported file and read the channel list against your paper map.
• Solo each output and confirm the content matches the label.
• Check that no channel is unexpectedly silent, an empty waveform is a red flag.
• Confirm channel count, sample rate and bit depth in the Audio Inspector.
