What is the LFE channel, and why it is not a subwoofer channel
The point one in 5.1. Misunderstood on nearly every delivery, and the single easiest way to ruin a stereo downmix.
LFE stands for Low Frequency Effects. It is the dedicated channel in 5.1 and 7.1 carrying content below roughly 120 Hz, and it is the point one in the name because it is band limited rather than full range. It exists for effects that need more low end headroom than the main channels can give: explosions, impacts, weight.
It is not the subwoofer channel
This is the confusion that causes the most damage. A subwoofer in a calibrated room reproduces the LFE channel plus the bass redirected from any speakers set to small by bass management. LFE is content in the mix. The subwoofer is a speaker in the room. One is a channel, the other is a destination.
The plus 10 dB offset
The LFE channel is calibrated 10 dB hotter than a main channel in the playback chain. That headroom is deliberate, and it means the file itself must be mixed with that offset in mind. Ignore it and your effects arrive either buried or overwhelming, depending on which direction you got it wrong.
What to do in a stereo downmix
The standard LoRo and LtRt downmix equations discard the LFE channel entirely. That is not laziness: the LFE is band limited effects content calibrated at plus 10, and folding it into a stereo pair usually produces mud and clipping rather than weight. If a scene genuinely relies on the LFE, mix a replacement low end from the main channels instead of summing the LFE in.
- L and R: full level in the downmix.
- C: typically minus 3 dB into both sides.
- Ls and Rs: typically minus 3 dB or lower, depending on the target.
- LFE: omitted by default.
The surround downmix tool here follows exactly that: L and R at zero, the other roles at minus 3 dB, and the LFE fader parked at its minimum so it contributes nothing unless you deliberately raise it.
