Sound design software: what you actually need, and what you can skip

You need one DAW, one pitch tool and a way to prepare files. Everything else is preference dressed up as necessity.

Sound design software falls into three groups: a DAW where the work happens, processors that transform material, and utilities that prepare and deliver files. Most people over-invest in the second group and neglect the third.

The DAW

  • Pro Tools: the studio standard for post, strongest for dialogue and delivery workflows, subscription based.
  • Reaper: cheap, fast, deeply scriptable, excellent for batch work and large sound libraries.
  • Nuendo: post oriented Steinberg system, strong for game audio and immersive formats.
  • Fairlight in DaVinci Resolve: free with Resolve, capable, and convenient when you also cut picture.
  • Audacity: fine for trimming and simple processing, weak for editing to picture.

The honest answer is that any of these can deliver a broadcast soundtrack. Choose the one whose editing shortcuts you learn fastest, because speed in editing matters more than any plugin.

Processing you will actually use

A good pitch and time tool, a convolution reverb for placing sounds in spaces, a decent EQ and a spectral repair tool for cleanup. That covers most designed effects. Exotic granular and modular tools are enjoyable but produce a recognisable house sound if you lean on them.

The utility layer nobody budgets for

Before anything creative happens, files need to be split, merged, remapped, converted and renamed. This is where projects lose hours. You do not need a paid tool for it.

  • Split multichannel field recordings into named mono stems.
  • Merge mono takes back into a multichannel file for delivery.
  • Remap channel order to match a delivery specification.
  • Convert sample rate and bit depth for library or broadcast specs.
  • Extract audio from reference video at its native rate.

Every one of those runs in the browser here, without installation, and the files never leave your machine, which matters when the material is under embargo.

What you can skip

Plugin bundles bought during sales and never opened, sample libraries you have not catalogued, and any tool that requires uploading confidential rushes to a server you do not control.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best free sound design software?
Fairlight inside DaVinci Resolve is the most capable free option for work to picture. Reaper's evaluation version is the most flexible for library work.
Do I need Pro Tools for professional work?
Only if you are exchanging sessions with studios that require it. For your own deliverables the format matters, not the DAW.
Can I prepare delivery files without installing anything?
Yes. Splitting, merging, channel mapping and sample rate conversion all run locally in the browser on this site.
