What converting MP3 to WAV can and cannot do
It prevents loss, it does not undo it
MP3 encoding permanently discards information. Decoding to WAV restores the file to linear PCM so nothing further is lost when you edit and export, but the detail the encoder removed is gone. Anyone promising restored quality is selling you a bigger file.
Why editors ask for WAV anyway
Uncompressed audio scrubs quickly, edits sample-accurately and does not accumulate codec artefacts each time you export. On a long project the file size is a fair trade for not degrading the audio at every render.
