48 kHz vs 96 kHz: which sample rate should you actually shoot at?

The honest answer for most productions is 48 kHz. The interesting part is the small set of cases where it is not.

Sample rate arguments generate more heat than light. For film and television the standard is 48 kHz, and it has been for decades. That is not inertia, it is a deliberate match to video delivery specifications. But 96 kHz exists for reasons, and knowing them is worth six minutes.

What sample rate actually controls

Sample rate sets the highest frequency a recording can represent, at roughly half the rate. 48 kHz captures up to 24 kHz, which is above the range of human hearing. 96 kHz captures up to 48 kHz, which nobody can hear directly.

So the benefit of 96 kHz is not audibility. It is headroom for processing, and specifically for extreme pitch and time manipulation.

When 48 kHz is the right call

  • Dialogue on any narrative or documentary production.
  • Anything delivered to broadcast, streaming or cinema, where 48 kHz is the spec.
  • Long shoot days where card space and transfer time matter.
  • Multitrack work, where doubling the rate doubles an already large file set.

When 96 kHz earns its size

  • Sound effects recording intended for a library, where designers will pitch material down heavily.
  • Wildlife, ultrasonic or mechanical recording where content above 24 kHz is the point.
  • Foley and specialist recording destined for aggressive time stretching.

Pitching a 96 kHz recording down two octaves brings ultrasonic detail into the audible range as real content instead of interpolation artefacts. That is a genuine creative gain, and it is the main reason sound designers keep the option.

Mixing rates in one project

Avoid it where you can. Every file that does not match the session rate gets converted, either by a good offline converter or by a mediocre real time one inside your NLE. The offline conversion is better, and doing it deliberately means you know exactly what happened.

When you do need to convert, convert once, from the original master, and keep the master. Repeated conversions accumulate small errors and there is never a reason to chain them.
