XLR cables on set: what the three pins actually do

Three pins, one ground, and the reason your boom stays quiet next to a lighting rig. A practical guide to XLR for film crews.

The XLR cable is the least glamorous item in the sound cart and the one that ruins the most days. When a track buzzes, crackles when the boom swings, or drops out on a pan, the cable is the first suspect long before the microphone.

What the three pins carry

  • Pin 1: ground, connected to the shield around the pair.
  • Pin 2: the signal, in phase, sometimes called hot.
  • Pin 3: the same signal with polarity inverted, called cold.

The receiving input subtracts pin 3 from pin 2. Anything picked up identically by both wires along the way, mains hum, dimmer buzz, radio interference, cancels out, while the audio doubles. That is balanced audio, and it is why a 30 metre run next to a lighting cable can still be clean.

Balanced is not the same as loud

An XLR connector does not guarantee a balanced circuit or a microphone level signal. Line level gear, wireless receivers and mixer outputs all use XLR at very different levels. Feeding a line output into a mic input without a pad gives you distortion that no amount of processing will undo.

Choosing cables for location work

  • Star quad construction for boom cables: four conductors paired up reject magnetic hum far better than standard two conductor cable.
  • Neutrik or equivalent connectors with proper strain relief; the solder joint is what fails first.
  • Short runs on the cart, 50 cm to 1 m, to keep the loom tidy and reduce noise pickup.
  • One long 15 m or 25 m run reserved for playback and video village, never used on the boom.

Diagnosing a suspect cable

Plug it in, record 30 seconds and wiggle the connector at each end. A cable fault shows as sharp crackles rather than a smooth level change. Record the same test on a known good cable and compare the two files in the inspector: the noise floor tells you immediately which one is faulty.

Label every cable with a number. When a fault shows up in post you want to know which run made it, not that some cable somewhere was intermittent.

Frequently asked questions

Does a more expensive XLR cable sound better?
Not audibly, but it survives longer. Pay for connectors, strain relief and star quad geometry, not for exotic conductor claims.
Can I use an XLR cable for phantom power?
Yes. 48 V phantom travels on pins 2 and 3 with pin 1 as return, which is why the cable must be wired correctly on all three pins.
Why does my track hum only on one microphone?
Usually a broken shield on pin 1, which turns the balanced pair into an aerial. Swap the cable before blaming the mic.
