Wind noise: the only problem you cannot fix in post
Wind is not a sound, it is turbulence hitting a diaphragm. Once it has overloaded the capsule, no plugin gives the dialogue back.
Every other location problem has a fix. Traffic can be edited around, a fridge can be switched off, a clunky prop can be replaced in foley. Wind is different, because it does not add a sound on top of dialogue, it saturates the microphone that was supposed to capture it.
What is actually happening
Moving air creates turbulence at the microphone grille. The diaphragm sees large, slow pressure swings that push the capsule and the preamp into distortion. The result is a rumbling roar with dialogue buried inside a signal that has already been clipped.
Protection, in order of effectiveness
- Blimp with a fur cover: the only serious solution for exteriors.
- Fur over foam on a lavalier, plus placement out of the airflow.
- A physical shield: a body, a car door, a wall between wind and mic.
- Foam alone: indoors only, effectively decorative outside.
High pass on set, gently
Engage the recorder or mic high pass around eighty hertz to stop rumble from eating headroom. Do not roll off aggressively at two hundred hertz to make monitoring comfortable, because that thinning is baked into the file and cannot be undone.
What post can and cannot repair
Low frequency rumble under clean dialogue is fixable with filtering and a spectral pass. Distorted wind gusts that clipped the capsule are not. If a take is unusable, log it on set and plan ADR rather than discovering it in the edit.
