Record audio with a smartphone for film: a beginner's guide
Your phone is already a recorder. Add a cheap lav and a quiet room, and the results are better than many built-in camera tracks.
A smartphone is a surprisingly capable audio recorder for beginner filmmakers. The microphone built into the phone is not the tool you want for dialogue, but the recording app, storage and converters inside the phone are excellent. With a small external microphone and a few habits, you can record audio that cuts cleanly into a professional edit.
Use the right app
The default voice memo app is fine for notes, but a dedicated recording app gives you more control. Look for an app that lets you choose WAV, set the sample rate to 48 kHz, and disable automatic gain control. Some apps also let you monitor levels with a meter.
Add a lavalier microphone
A wired lavalier that plugs into the phone's headphone jack or USB port is the cheapest way to get clean dialogue. Clip it to the speaker's placket, run the cable inside the shirt, and place the phone in a pocket or on a stand near the speaker. The microphone does the work; the phone is just storage.
Set levels and disable processing
Turn off every automatic enhancement the app or phone offers: noise reduction, auto gain, EQ and voice enhancement. These are designed for phone calls, not film. Set a fixed recording level and aim for peaks around minus 12 dBFS. If the app does not show a meter, do a test and listen back on headphones.
Sync with a clap or a visual cue
Phone recorders do not share timecode with cameras, so you need a sync point. Clap in front of the lens at the start of the take, or have the actor do a sharp handclap. The spike will be visible in both the camera audio and the phone recording, and Premiere or Resolve can sync by waveform from there.
Transfer and inspect the files
Transfer the WAV files to your computer without re-encoding. Check the sample rate, bit depth and track layout before importing. The audio inspector on this site reads these properties locally and catches common mistakes like a 44.1 kHz recording dropped into a 48 kHz timeline.
