Mono to stereo: what actually happens, and when it is a bad idea
You cannot create stereo from mono. You can create a two channel file, and that is usually exactly what the delivery spec wants.
Converting mono to stereo comes up constantly: an editor rejects a mono file, a platform demands two channels, a delivery spec says stereo. It is worth being precise about what is happening, because the honest answer is that no information is added.
Dual mono is not stereo
Copying a mono track to left and right gives a dual mono file: two identical channels. It plays centred on any system and sums back to the original with no phase issues. It satisfies a two channel requirement. It is not stereo, because stereo means the two channels differ.
When dual mono is the right answer
- A delivery spec that requires a two channel WAV.
- A platform that plays a mono file out of one speaker only.
- A voiceover that must be centred and never move.
- A poly WAV stem that has to be paired with other stereo stems.
The fake widening trap
Plugins that widen mono use delays, phase shifts or chorus on one side. They add width and they add phase problems. Anything summed back to mono for broadcast, phone speakers or a venue will thin out or partly disappear. For dialogue and voiceover, do not do it.
Real stereo needs two microphones
Genuine stereo comes from capture: an XY pair, ORTF, MS or a spaced pair. Ambiences, music and room recordings deserve that. Dialogue almost never does, because a moving voice in the stereo field is distracting on a cut.
Making the file
Merge the mono file into a two channel export, or map one source channel to both outputs. Keep the level identical on both sides so nothing pulls off centre, and export at the sample rate and bit depth the delivery asks for.
