What a boom operator actually does, and why the pole is the easy part
Holding a pole is the visible part. The job is anticipating a scene you have heard once and staying out of a frame you cannot see.
The boom operator works for the production sound mixer and is responsible for getting a microphone as close to the dialogue as the frame allows. Everything else, arm strength included, is secondary to knowing where the line is going before it is spoken.
The four constraints, at once
- Frame: the mic must stay out of the top of the image and out of any reflection.
- Light: the pole must not throw a shadow across a face or a wall.
- Blocking: the operator moves with the actors without crossing a dolly or a mark.
- Perspective: a wide shot should not sound like a close up.
Perspective is a creative decision
Distance changes tone. Close, a shotgun is dry and present. Pulled back, the room arrives with the voice. Matching mic distance loosely to shot size is what makes a scene cut together without post having to fake it with reverb.
Overhead, underslung, or planted
Overhead from the front is the default: it favours the mouth and rejects the floor. Underslung is for when the frame is tight at the top or a ceiling is low. A plant mic hidden in the set takes over when neither works, and the operator places and hides it before the take.
What ends up in the file
The boom is almost always track 1 of the poly WAV, with lavs following and a mix on the last pair. Track names written by the mixer travel in the file metadata, so a well labelled recording arrives in post already telling you which channel is the boom.
